The announcement last week of a new US tariff schedule represents a seismic shift in the global economy. This is not an attempt to over-dramatise the events of last week, but is an attempt to highlight the deeper, more enduring change that has occurred.

We have gone from a world where global free trade was the dominant economic operating system to one where it is an outdated, almost quaint, pipe dream.
